As of 29 August 2014 the battalion has once again been deactivated due to a force shaping initiative and downsizing of the Marine Corps. In late 2005, the battalion was once again activated and attached to the 8th Marine Regiment at MCB Camp Lejeune. BG Michael P. Ryan relieved BG Stiles as commanding General on that date. Walter Singleton posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his actions during Operation Prairie III in March 1967. During its deployments, the Marines became a Marine Expeditionary Unit(MEU) that was Special Operations Capable(SOC). .
